Salsa Matinee with 10-piece orchestra Charanga Tropical and DJONE, with dance floor at Icehouse.
Charanga Tropical is back at Icehouse on Sunday, October 4, for another Salsa Matinee. The 10-piece orchestra takes the stage from 5 to 7 PM, and DJONE of Salsa Police Entertainment keeps the floor moving from 7 to 8 PM. The matinee is one of the band's weekly residencies at the venue, so if you've been before, you know the drill: live salsa followed by a DJ set to close it out.
Charanga Tropical is a Minneapolis-based orchestra founded in 2006 by flutist and bandleader Doug Little, who brings together Cuban and American musicians. They play in the charanga style—one of the few ensembles in the U.S. that still does—with instrumentation that goes back to the roots of Cuban music: violins, flute, vocals, and a full Latin rhythm section. It's a sound that's as much about the strings and the flute as it is about the percussion.
The band has earned Latin Grammy nominations, multiple grant awards, and international tours. In 2015, they became the only American group ever to perform at Havana's International Danzón Festival, and in 2019 they backed Grammy-winning Cuban singer Mayito Rivera. They recorded In Cuba in the same historic Havana studio that produced Buena Vista Social Club, and that connection to the island's tradition runs through their whole approach.

After the live set, DJONE of Salsa Police Entertainment takes over from 7 to 8 PM, spinning bachata, timba, and other Latin favorites to keep the dancing going. Doors open at 4 PM, the show starts at 5 PM, and entry is $15 in advance or $15 on the day. Icehouse is 21+.
