A night of bluegrass and folk music with the Minnesota duo LaPlant Road and special guests Rachel Bearinger and Garret Nasset.
LaPlant Road play Icehouse on Sunday, October 18, with Rachel Bearinger and Garret Nasset opening. The night is billed as a few hours of bluegrass and folk.
LaPlant Road is the duo of Emily LaPlant and Liz Ashworth, childhood friends who call themselves soul sisters. They grew up on an old country road in Grand Rapids, in Northern Minnesota — the place that gave the band its name. Their music is an ode to that landscape, blending traditional folk and fiddle tunes with jazz, R&B and rock 'n' roll into something they call New Acoustic.
That description tells you where they're coming from: the fiddle tunes and the Northern Minnesota roots are the folk side, while the jazz, R&B and rock 'n' roll are the parts they pull from outside that tradition. When they put them together, they get something that doesn't fit neatly into one box, which is why they give it its own name. The whole thing is built on the friendship between LaPlant and Ashworth, two people who've known each other since they were kids.
