Nashville artist-activist Heather Mae plays The Hook and Ladder with Mother Banjo on banjo opening the show.
Heather Mae plays The Hook and Ladder on Friday, November 6, with Mother Banjo opening. Mae is a Nashville-based artist-activist who blends folk, alternative rock, and indie pop into songs she describes as anthems for outsiders and survivors. Her work centers on mental health, queer liberation, survivor empowerment, and social justice, and she was named Artist-Activist of the Year by the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. One of her better-known tracks, the #MeToo-inspired "Warrior," features a choir of more than 100 female vocalists. She also won the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest competition.
Opening the night is Mother Banjo, the stage name of Minneapolis-based songwriter Ellen Stanley, who plays banjo and sings. Her album Eyes on the Sky mixes folk, bluegrass, and Americana, and she's shared the stage with Dar Williams, Jim Lauderdale, and Lucy Wainwright Roche. Outside of her own music, she works as a publicist, a folk community organizer, and the host of the syndicated Womenfolk Radio Show and the Back Catalog Listening Party podcast.
