Screening of the cult Egyptian musical horror film 'Fangs (Anyab)' (1981) by Mohammed Shebl, part of the Mizna Film Series at The Trylon Cinema.
The Trylon is screening Fangs (Anyab) on Wednesday, October 28, at 7 PM. It's a 1981 Egyptian musical-horror oddity directed by Mohammed Shebl, and it's being presented by Mizna.
If you've never heard of it, Fangs is billed as Egypt's answer to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The plot follows two innocent lovers who stumble into a nightclub of disco-dancing vampires, with rock 'n' roll numbers and campy bloodsucking mayhem throughout. It's where Cairo meets Transylvania. Over the years it's become a cult classic, and it's often read as an astute commentary on the Egyptian socio-political climate, wrapped up in disco, glam, and vampire fangs.
The screening is part of the Mizna Film Series, the quarterly program of the Twin Cities Arab Film Festival. This year the festival is celebrating its twentieth edition with a year-long, multi-venue season called "Looking Forward, Looking Back," which centers on images from the history of SWANA filmmaking and past festivals. Mizna is also presenting Halloween screenings of Fangs in Los Angeles and Amsterdam, so this is one of a few places where it's popping up around the same time.
