Intimate solo performance by Bill Callahan with Rick Maguire of the indie rock band Pile opening at The Cedar.
Bill Callahan is back at The Cedar Cultural Center on Friday, November 6, for an intimate solo performance. He's not coming alone, though—Rick Maguire of the indie rock band Pile opens the night.
Callahan's latest album, My Days of 58, is his eighth and his first since 2022. It kept the core musicians from 2022's REALITY: —guitarist Matt Kinsey, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, and drummer Jim White—who also toured on 2024's live record Resuscitate!. From there, he expanded the fold with fiddler Richard Bowden, pianist Pat Thrasher, bassist Chris Vreeland, trombonist Mike St. Clair, and pedal steel player Bill McCullough. This show, however, strips that back down to a solo set, so you'll hear those songs without the full ensemble.
Opening the bill is Rick Maguire, who's best known as a member of Pile. The band started out as Maguire's solo act in the late 2000s in Boston and has since become a prominent fixture of the city's indie rock scene. Seeing him here is a bit of a full-circle moment, since Pile grew out of his own solo work.
