Concert by Leenalchi, a seven-piece band from Seoul that reimagines traditional Korean pansori for the 21st century, part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series.
Leenalchi play The Cedar Cultural Center on Saturday, November 7, as part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series. It's a seven-piece band from Seoul that takes pansori—the ancient Korean art of storytelling rooted in shamanism and developed during the Joseon Dynasty—and reimagines it for the 21st century. Traditional pansori is built on a triad of singer, drummer, and audience; Leenalchi expands that with two bassists, drums, keys, and three singers, and no guitar. The result is a rhythmic backbone of bass funk and hi-hats, with onomatopoeic sounds that mimic everything from burbling streams to cackling crows.
The group was the brainchild of bassist and film composer Young Gyu Jang, who scored Korean films like Train to Busan, The Wailing, and The Good, the Bad, the Weird, and fronted the now-disbanded art band SsingSsing. After gaining widespread praise in South Korea, the band is now on its first-ever US tour. Brian Eno called it "a different kind of K-pop" and said he'd "never heard anything quite like this."
