Cabaret queen Mistress Ginger sings Kurt Weill's songs, from Weimar Berlin to the American theatre, accompanied by pianist Casey Rafn.
Mistress Ginger takes the stage at Bryant Lake Bowl on Saturday, October 17, for Bewitched by Weill, a cabaret night built around the songs of Kurt Weill. She'll be accompanied by Casey Rafn on piano, and the set follows Weill's music from the seedy beer halls of Weimar Berlin to the bright lights of the American theater. Along the way, Ginger weaves a story of desire, exile, reinvention, and the search for love and belonging, with songs like "Mack the Knife," "Surabaya Johnny," "September Song," and "My Ship" serving as the landmarks.
Ginger is a Twin Cities cabaret artist—singer, dancer, and storyteller—known for theatrical productions that blend glamour, humor, heart, and imagination. Since 2006, she's staged original cabaret work at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theatre, Crooners Supper Club, The Woman's Club of Minneapolis, and the Ordway Centre. She also wrote Mistress Ginger Cooks: Everyday Vegan Food for Everyone.
Rafn is a pianist, music director, and recording artist whose playing the Star Tribune has called "extraordinary." He's a member of the Latin Grammy-nominated trio Trés and has performed with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and Cantus.
