Seated all-ages concert by the duo CelloGayageum, blending Western classical music with Korean gug-ak, part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series.
CelloGayageum plays The Cedar Cultural Center on Tuesday, February 2, 2027. It's part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series, and the show is all-ages and seated.
The duo takes its name from the two instruments they play: the cello and the gayageum, a traditional Korean zither. They were founded in 2016 by Austrian cellist Sol Daniel Kim and Korean gayageum virtuoso Dayoung Yoon. The pairing brings together the soulful depth of Western classical music and the elegance of Korean gug-ak, the country's traditional music. They draw on Korean folk melodies and global sensibilities to create a sound that feels both ancient and refreshingly modern.
Dayoung Yoon is a gayageum player and composer who studied at the Korea National University of Arts. She was awarded the Soorim Cultural Prize in 2018 and Jeongdong Theater's 'Youthful Artist of the Year' in 2020. Sol Daniel Kim was born in Vienna and represented Austria in 'Eurovision Young Musicians,' and has performed with orchestras like the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra. The duo was inspired by Berlin's Pavilion of Unity, and they describe their work as bridging the gap between these two musical traditions.
