Screening of Juan López Moctezuma's 1977 horror film 'Alucarda', a loose adaptation of 'Carmilla', in The Trylon Cinema's 'Evil Incantations' series.
The Trylon Cinema is screening Alucarda over three nights, Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25. It's a 1977 Mexican horror film directed by Juan López Moctezuma, running 78 minutes in Spanish with English subtitles. Tina Romero stars, alongside Susana Kamini and David Silva.
Loosely based on Sheridan Le Fanu's vampire novella Carmilla, the story follows Justine, an orphan sent to an austere convent who befriends Alucarda. When the two open a sealed tomb in the monastery crypt, they unleash a curse that spirals into forest blood rites and demonic possession. Father Lázaro and an order of linen-swaddled nuns respond with isolation, physical restraints, and ritual flagellation. The film is notorious for its gore, nudity, and a shrieking audio track that clips and distorts the mono optical track. Critics at the time dismissed the sound as cheap drive-in sensationalism, but the work is now regarded as one of Mexico's best horror films of all time, with Romero's performance rejecting the scream queen trope of helpless panic.
The screening is part of The Trylon's Evil Incantations series, which looks at witchcraft as a source of superstition, experimentation, resistance, and feminist power. If you're into cult cinema or Mexican horror, this is a good place to start.
