Six choreographers explore their cultural roots through traditional and contemporary African and diasporic dance in a night of storytelling and movement.
AfroContIgbo Dance & Wellness Company presents Origins to Ovation at The Cedar Cultural Center on Friday, November 20. It's a single evening that brings together six choreographers, each exploring their own cultural roots through traditional and contemporary African and diasporic dance. The lineup includes Abrecia Haillasellise, Elsie Nsoh from Togo, Korma Aguh-Stuckmayer, Patricia 'Tricia' Davies, Peace Madimutsa from Zimbabwe, and Prince Warapisseme Mouta Wara from Togo. The night is built around storytelling, cultural expression, and movement.
AfroContIgbo was founded in 2014 by Korma Aguh-Stuckmayer, a Nigerian-born dance educator and artist based here in Minnesota. Since then, she's taught through community classes, school residencies, workshops, and youth programs. Her signature 'Γmume' residency combines dance training, cultural storytelling, and performance, and Origins to Ovation follows that same thread, gathering these six choreographers to work from their own roots.
The host, The Cedar Cultural Center, is a non-profit in Cedar Riverside with a mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music and dance. It sits in one of the Twin Cities' most prolific live-music neighborhoods, home to the largest Somali diaspora in the U.S., and welcomes more than 100 musicians from around the world to its stage each year.
