The award-winning play by Rae Mainwaring, a three-woman, one-woman show about growing up in the shadow of Multiple Sclerosis, presented by Carbon Theatre.
Bright Places runs at HOME from 29 to 31 October, a three-night stand in First Street. It's an autobiographical play by disabled writer Rae Mainwaring, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 23. Carbon Theatre is producing it here, and it's a three-woman show about growing up in the shadow of MS.
Mainwaring wrote it after noticing how rarely chronic illness appeared on stage and screen, and how, when it did, it was almost always negative, reductive or pitying. She wanted an honest reflection of her own experience instead. The result is billed as a joyous, life-affirming and darkly funny show that puts invisible illness centre stage while digging into the difficult truths around ableism. It's set to an early-noughties pop soundtrack and staged with a costume box and plenty of glitter.
The play was commissioned by Birmingham Rep in 2020 and first produced by Carbon Theatre in 2024, following a critically acclaimed run at Soho Theatre. For this run, the cast is Lauren Foster, Aimee Berwick and Rebecca Holmes, with Natallia Bulynia as company understudy. The production partners with Shift.ms, the digital community for people with MS.
