World's largest youth drama festival presenting an evening of Shakespeare at Contact Theatre.
The Coram Shakespeare Schools Festival is coming to Contact Theatre on Wednesday 4 November, with the festival running through to Friday 6 November. It's billed as the world's largest youth drama festival, and this particular stop brings an evening of Shakespeare to the Manchester stage.
Contact has long been one of the festival's Manchester homes, and it's easy to see why. The venue sits on Devas Street in the heart of the Corridor Manchester innovation district, and it's a not-for-profit creative hub that went through a transformational redevelopment. It now ranks in the top 1% of sustainable public buildings in the North West: it runs on renewable energy, follows a zero landfill policy, and relies on natural ventilation rather than powered air-conditioning. The main auditorium, Space 1, has a stage that can be reconfigured from end-on to thrust, and the room has played host to the likes of Amnesty International, the University of Manchester, the BBC, CBeebies, and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
As for the festival itself, the Coram Shakespeare Schools Festival is a huge youth drama event that takes Shakespeare's plays and puts them in the hands of young people. The Manchester stop is one evening of that, with students taking on the Bard in the heart of the city. It's the kind of thing that brings a lot of energy to the room, especially when you've got young performers tackling some of the most famous lines in the English language.
