A world premiere stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson's supernatural thriller, blurring suspense and the supernatural.
The Haunting of Hill House opens at the Palace Theatre on Tuesday 27 October, running through to Saturday 31 October. It's a world premiere stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson's supernatural thriller, and it arrives on the back of the hit Netflix series that drew on the same material. Jackson (1916-1965) was an American writer of horror and mystery who published six novels, two memoirs and more than 200 short stories; her son, Laurence J. Hyman, has said that her legacy endures through the novel.
The story follows a group of investigators whose curiosity turns to terror as the house itself seems to tighten its grip on those inside. It's a full-length play with an interval, and it's recommended for ages 12+ because of themes of suspense and supernatural tension, moments of darkness, sudden effects and atmospheric sound design. If you're not one for jump scares or heavy atmosphere, that's a good thing to keep in mind before you book.
Behind the production are two names you might recognise from the theatre. The adaptation is written by Stef Smith, an Olivier and BAFTA winner known for Roadkill, Girl in the Machine and Swallow. It's directed by Martin Constantine, an award-winning theatre and opera director. The production is supported using public funding by Arts Council England and forms part of a UK tour, so this is the first time it's hitting the stage.

It runs from Tuesday 27th to Saturday 31st October at the Palace Theatre, 97 Oxford St, Manchester M1 6FT. With the run ending on Halloween night, it's a fitting slot for a ghost story.
