Free Relaxed Performance with The Early Birds, a singalong, dancing and storytelling session for children aged 3 to 5.
The Early Birds are taking over The Clore Ballroom on Friday 23 October for WordPlay, a singalong, dancing and storytelling session for children aged 3 to 5. It's not a one-off, either: they'll be back on Friday 13 November, Friday 20 November, Friday 4 December and Friday 18 December, all starting at 11.30am and running for about 45 minutes.
Behind the name is a proper line-up. The Early Birds bring together poet and performer Arji Manuelpillai, musician and writer Emmy the Great (Emma-Lee Moss), and harpist Serafina Steer. Between them, they've got poetry, songwriting and the harp to work with, and they use them to lead the singalongs, the dancing and the storytelling that make up the session.
WordPlay is the early years strand of Open Doors, the Southbank Centre's programme of regular free events. The sessions are held inside a soft sensory environment designed by theatre designer Rosie Elnile, and they're all Relaxed Performances. That means a relaxed approach to noise and movement, with noise-cancelling headphones available and full wheelchair access. The Clore Ballroom, which houses the strand, is open six days a week inside Royal Festival Hall.
