Free weekly Friday Relaxed Performance for babies and grown-ups with The Early Birds, combining original songs, live harp, singalongs, dancing and storytelling.
WordPlay is back at The Clore Ballroom on Friday 23 October, the early years strand of Open Doors, Southbank Centre's programme of regular free events. This particular session is for the under-twos, and it's run by The Early Birds, a new trio for babies and grown-ups. They bring original songs, live harp and playful moments to the room, with singalongs, dancing and storytelling. The line-up is poet and performer Arji Manuelpillai, musician and writer Emma-Lee Moss and harpist Serafina Steer.
The whole thing is set inside a soft sensory environment designed by Rosie Elnile, an award-winning set and costume designer who works across drama, opera and live art. She received a Jerwood Arts Grant to explore scenography as a sole narrative device, and that's exactly what she's doing here: the space itself does a lot of the storytelling. It's a sensory setting for the little ones to experience rather than just a room to sit in.
It's a Relaxed Performance, which is the most useful bit for anyone going with a baby: you can come and go as you please, noise-cancelling headphones are available and the space is wheelchair accessible. Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult and no unaccompanied adults are allowed. There's also a separate 11.30am session for ages three to five, so if you've got two little ones of different ages, you can do both.

The session starts at 10.30am and runs for 45 minutes. It's free and no ticket is required. If this Friday doesn't work, there are more on Friday 13 November, Friday 20 November, Friday 4 December and Friday 18 December, all at The Clore Ballroom on Level 2 of the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX.
