Caroline Steinbeis's production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, with a new translation by Rory Mullarkey, in the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
The Seagull opens at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on 15 January, running through to 10 April 2027. It's Anton Chekhov's twentieth-century classic and the first of his four major plays, and it's the only one of his works inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Director Caroline Steinbeis and translator Rory Mullarkey are back together for this one; they previously staged Three Sisters at the Playhouse, and they return to its intimate, candlelit setting with a new translation. The story follows an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer in a house by a lake, where a play within a play unravels into a gripping tale of art, ego and love. It's a production that touches on suicide and animal cruelty and references child bereavement, and The Telegraph called it 'entertaining and profound'.
