Joe Hill-Gibbins' production of Shakespeare's thriller about friendship, betrayal and political violence, staged in the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Julius Caesar opens at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on 6 November, running through to 14 February. It's Joe Hill-Gibbins directing and adapting the play, and it's the first time Caesar has ever been staged in the Playhouse — the indoor, candlelit theatre at Shakespeare's Globe on Bankside. Artistic Director Michelle Terry has called the whole winter 2026/27 season 'a season of debuts', and this is one of the big ones: Caesar and King John are both making their Playhouse debuts this winter.
Hill-Gibbins previously directed Ghosts here, and he's returning to take on Shakespeare's thriller as a brutal, timely tale of friendship, betrayal and political violence. The plot builds in the corridors of the Senate, where a murderous conspiracy grows around the dictator's ambition until the political infighting spills over into civil war. The production includes depictions of war, suicide and violence, and there are accessible performances with BSL interpretation, audio description and captioning.
The cast features Kate Duchêne playing Caesar, the Soothsayer and Octavius; Caoilfhionn Dunne as Brutus; Adam Gillen as Mark Antony; and Natey Jones as Cassius. The Playhouse is an intimate space, and the production invites you to take your place as a citizen of Rome.

Tickets for the galleries range from £89 down to £29, with standing at £10 or £5. The run starts on 6 November and goes until 14 February, so there's plenty of time to catch it over the winter.
