Screening of Sally Potter's 'Orlando' (1992), starring Tilda Swinton, within the 'The 90s on Screen' film series at Tate Britain.
Tate Britain is screening Sally Potter's Orlando (1992) on Saturday 5 December, as part of its The 90s on Screen film series. It's a big-screen showing of the film that stars Tilda Swinton and takes Virginia Woolf's novel as its source.
The story follows a character who lives for four hundred years, starting as a young man in the court of Elizabeth I, searching for love and freedom, and continuing the journey centuries later as a woman. It's a film about identity, desire and the freedom to become who you are, and it's described as witty, romantic and full of striking images. If you've read the book, this is a chance to see Potter's take on it; if you haven't, it's a good way into the story.
The screening sits within The 90s on Screen, a film series running alongside The 90s: Art and Fashion, Tate Britain's first exhibition to look at the art, photography and fashion of the 1990s. That exhibition is curated by Edward Enninful OBE, whose own experience of the decade shapes it, and it brings together nearly seventy artists, photographers and designers, from the Young British Artists to Alexander McQueen, with more than a hundred photographs, paintings, sculptures and garments. The exhibition is supported by McQueen, with Dazed as media partner.
