UK premiere of two new works, 13 and 14, by the Chinese contemporary dance company TAO Dance Theater, choreographed by Tao Ye.
TAO Dance Theater are coming to Sadler's Wells East on 26 and 27 January 2027, with choreography by Tao Ye. It's the UK premiere of two dance works, 13 and 14, and the show is part of The Rose Prize 2027.
To get where they are, it helps to know the company's history. TAO Dance Theater was founded in 2008 by Tao Ye, Duan Ni and Wang Hao, and has since become one of the most sought-after Chinese contemporary dance companies on the international stage, with its Numerical Series touring worldwide. In 2023, they won the Silver Lion Award for Dance at La Biennale di Venezia. The two works at the centre of this show, 13 and 14, came out of a specific moment: the crisis of 2022, the company's fourteenth year, forced a transformation that gave birth to them. In 2024, the company established a second dancer group, TAO Dance Theater 2, whose performers aren't limited by age, occupation or nationality. Critics have described choreographer Tao Ye as a radical new presence on China's contemporary dance scene.
