Screening of Marc Evans' Welsh language drama 'Effi o Blaenau' at the Barbican's Senior Community Cinema for cinema-goers aged 60 and over.
Effi o Blaenau screens at the Barbican Centre on Monday 26 October, part of the Senior Community Cinema programme. It's a Welsh language drama directed by Marc Evans, and it's based on Gary Owen's acclaimed monodrama Iphigenia in Splott, which The Guardian called 'magnificent'.
The story follows Effi, a directionless young woman in the hills of Northern Wales, trapped in a weekly loop of unemployment, clubbing and hangovers. Her life opens up when she has a chance encounter with an injured soldier, Lee, in a Llandudno nightclub. It's a hard-hitting look at a particular kind of drift, and the Welsh language is central to it.
The screening is part of the Barbican's Senior Community Cinema, which is aimed at cinema-goers aged 60 and over and those who matter to them. The idea is to screen the best of the cinema's new release programme at a quieter time of day, and to create a space to come together and connect with other audience members. You can come on your own or with a companion, friend or family member, and up to three under-60s can accompany each senior guest.
