One-night grime and UK street music celebration marking twenty years of SBTV, the YouTube channel founded by Jamal Edwards MBE.
SBTV20 comes to The O2 on Wednesday 11 November, a one-night-only show marking twenty years since SBTV began. It's a celebration of grime and the UK street music scene, and of the legacy of its founder, Jamal Edwards MBE.
To understand what that means, you have to go back to 2006, when Edwards was given a video camera for Christmas and started filming his friends spitting bars on the local estate. By 2007, those videos were being uploaded to his YouTube channel, SBTV — named after his MC alias Smokey Barz. At the time, grime lived on pirate radio and street-corner DVDs, and SBTV became the place where British music was documented as it actually happened: unfiltered, unsigned and unmissable. It launched artists like Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Dave, Skepta, Jessie J, Lady Leshurr and Mist.
Edwards was awarded an MBE for services to music in 2015, when he was 24. This night is billed as one of the biggest music and grime events of the last twenty years, and it supports the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust.
