New musical and stage adaptation of Carlo Collodi's fairy tale, recommended for children aged five and up, at Shakespeare's Globe.
Pinocchio returns to Shakespeare's Globe on 28 November, running through to 3 January 2027. It's a brand-new musical and stage adaptation of Carlo Collodi's classic fairy tale, and it's not the Disney version you're thinking of. This one follows Geppetto, a restless maverick who dreams of a life beyond his traditional town and carves a wooden puppet that comes to life; the story then becomes the whirlwind adventure the two go on as they learn to love one another and shape their own community.
The book and lyrics are by Charlie Josephine, who wrote Cowbois for the Royal Court, and the music is by Jim Fortune, known for Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear at the National. It's directed by Sean Holmes, the Globe's Associate Artistic Director. The production is staged in the Globe's round open-air theatre of carved oak, which they turn into a world where puppets dance and the boundary between fairy tale and reality blurs. It follows a highly successful festive run in 2025 and is recommended as a family-friendly day out, best suited to children aged five and up.
On stage, Lee Braithwaite plays Pinocchio, with Nick Holder as Geppetto, Lucy McCormick as the Blue Fairy, Kerry Frampton as the Fox, Ed Gaughan as Stromboli and Steven Webb as Jiminy Cricket. The show runs for 2 hours 10 minutes, including a 20-minute interval, and performance times vary through the festive season.
