Pay What You Can screening of 'NAZA', the Israeli documentary by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor about the bombing campaign in Gaza.
Naza is showing at Barbican Cinema 3 as part of a run from Friday 16 to Thursday 29 October, with a special Pay What You Can screening on Friday 23 October at 18:20. It's a documentary by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, who previously made the Oscar-winning No Other Land.
The film is built around a series of one-on-one interviews. Abraham meets Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, cloaked in darkness, and asks them about the systems and technologies that underpin Israel's bombing campaign in Gaza. The title itself is a piece of military intelligence shorthand: Naza is the acronym for the number of civilians expected to be killed in an airstrike. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
There's a heavy personal cost behind it, too. Since the film came out, both Abraham and Szor have been denounced as traitors in Israel, and the Israeli Prime Minister has personally threatened to revoke their citizenship. It's a documentary that carries a fair bit of weight, and there's a warning you should know before you go: it contains distressing footage showing partial sight of the dead bodies of children and young people buried under rubble after a bombing in Gaza, Palestine. The runtime is 1 hour 20 minutes.
