Documentary by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor about the systems behind Israel's bombing campaign in Gaza, screened at the Barbican.
NAZA is showing at Barbican Cinema 1 from Friday 16 to Thursday 22 October, as part of the Barbican's Cinema Magic Mondays new releases programme. It's a documentary by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, who follow up their Oscar-winning No Other Land with this one. The film runs for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
The title comes from a military intelligence acronym for the number of civilians expected to be killed in an airstrike. That's the core of the film: Abraham, working as a journalist, conducts one-on-one interviews with Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, cloaked in darkness. He probes the systems and technologies behind Israel's bombing campaign in Gaza, and the interviews themselves are the main feature.
It's a heavy subject, and the filmmakers have paid for it. They've been denounced as traitors in Israel, with the Prime Minister threatening to revoke their citizenship. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
