Guided tour of the art and poster store at the London Transport Museum's Acton Depot, exploring the design heritage of London's transport.
London Transport Museum is running a guided tour of its art and poster store at the London Transport Museum Acton Depot on Saturday 24 October, starting at 11:00am. It's a look at the design heritage of London's transport, focusing on the posters and artwork that have shaped how the city's network is seen.
To get your bearings, the Acton Depot isn't a typical museum. It's a giant warehouse that houses the main storage for the London Transport Museum, and it's usually open to the public only on occasional open weekends and semi-regular tours. Inside, rows of old trains, buses and trams sit alongside a huge collection of transport-heritage scraps, displayed not formally but in a way the depot's own materials say is all the better for it. The tour works its way around the floor, explaining the history of London transport as you go.
This particular tour focuses on the art and poster store, so you'll be spending your time with the graphic side of things rather than just the vehicles. London's transport has a long history of commissioning artists and designers for its posters, and this is where much of that work is kept. It's a chance to see the posters and prints that have appeared on platforms and in stations across the city, and to hear about the design heritage they represent.
