The Martha Graham Dance Company, led by artistic director Janet Eilber, celebrates its centenary with Graham's 'Appalachian Spring' and 'Chronicle' plus new works by Janet Eilber and Jamar Roberts.
The Martha Graham Dance Company are coming to Sadler's Wells Theatre on Thursday 21 January, part of a London season that marks the company's centenary. This particular bill, Dancing Our Times - Programme B, runs for two hours with a 20-minute interval.
The programme mixes Graham's own work with newer pieces. You'll see Appalachian Spring and Chronicle, two of the company's most well-known works, alongside Janet Eilber's reimagining of Graham's Immediate Tragedy from 2020, which features a new score by Christopher Rountree. The fourth piece is We the People by Jamar Roberts, which premiered in 2024 with a score by Rhiannon Giddens.
For a bit of context, the company was founded by Martha Graham herself and has built a repertoire of 181 works that expanded the lexicon of contemporary dance, drawing on the social, political and psychological subjects of the day. That body of work has remained fertile ground for other leading artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Merce Cunningham, Anna Sokolow, Erick Hawkins, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev and Maya Plisetskaya. Artistic Director Janet Eilber now leads the company, which has performed in more than 50 countries. This London season is part of GRAHAM100, the company's centenary celebration.
