Interactive, craft-a-long retelling of Shakespeare's Macbeth built with recycled cardboard by designer Sam Wilde and written by playwright Hannah Khalil.
MakeBeth opens at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on Saturday 24 October, and it's a bit of a departure from your usual night at the Globe. It's a craft-a-long retelling of Macbeth, which means you're not just sitting there watching the story unfold — you're building it as you go. The whole thing is made from recycled cardboard, and the 'craft-a-long' part is exactly what it sounds like: you help make the set and props while the play happens around you. It's aimed at families with kids aged 7 and up, so it's a good one to bring the younger ones along to.
Two names are behind it: award-winning playwright Hannah Khalil wrote the retelling, and designer Sam Wilde built the cardboard world. It's an interactive take on the original, so rather than just following the plot, you're getting your hands dirty with the making of it. If you've never seen Macbeth before, it's a fair place to start, and if you have, this is a very different way of seeing it.
It's part of the Winter 2026/2027 season at Shakespeare's Globe, which Artistic Director Michelle Terry has called 'a season of debuts' and a winter of 'politics, provocation, passion, and pleasure'. The season brings a series of firsts to the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, the Globe's indoor theatre. Along with MakeBeth, the programme includes the world premiere of a new play by Timberlake Wertenbaker, and the indoor playhouse's first performances of Chekhov's The Seagull and the history plays Julius Caesar and *King John'.
