Darkly comic dance-theatre reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet by Ben Duke and his company Lost Dog, with a UK premiere at Sadler's Wells East.
Lost Dog bring The Last Hamlet to Sadler's Wells East from 4 to 7 November, with the UK premiere kicking off on the 4th. It's a darkly comic dance-theatre reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet, conceived and directed by Ben Duke and performed by Miguel Altunaga, Ben Duke and Hannah Shepherd.
In this version, Hamlet is depicted as depressed, violent and guilty of choosing procrastination over action. He's learned his drama has been cancelled and takes to the stage one last time, having worked up new material in the hope of persuading the audience to let him stay. From there, the piece opens up into a bleakly funny exploration of existence, love, revenge and the stories we can't seem to escape.
It's a co-commission between ThéÒtre de la Ville in Paris, Sadler's Wells, the Festival d'Avignon and RomaEuropa Festival in Rome, and it's drawn widespread critical praise along the way β described as a rare tour de force that dynamites Hamlet while preserving Shakespeare. The company's work has also been seen at Sadler's Wells in Death Trap with Rambert and in White Hair as part of Elixir Festival, and it's toured the UK and internationally with partners including Candoco and Scottish Dance Theatre.
