Sir Lenny Henry returns to the stage with his first stand-up tour since 2010, a mix of stand-up, storytelling and conversation about his career and Britain.
Sir Lenny Henry is back on stage at the Hackney Empire on Tuesday 3 November, his first stand-up tour in over a decade. He's calling it Still at Large, and it's not a standard comedy set: he describes it as part stand-up, part storytelling, and part conversation with himself and the audience.
It's a long gap since he last toured stand-up, back in 2010, and the show spends a good deal of its time looking back. He returns to the experiences that shaped him, tracing the roles and characters that defined his career over more than five decades. That takes him from the early days of Tiswas through to The Lenny Henry Show and Chef!, and on to dramatic turns in Othello and, more recently, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Along the way, he touches on identity, ageing, success, and the changing cultural landscape of Britain.
Henry's a familiar face across a lot of ground—comedian, actor, writer, and co-founder of Comic Relief—so there's plenty of that career to draw from. The storytelling side of the night lets him talk through those different chapters, and the conversational element brings the audience into it, rather than just having him deliver a set from the front of the room.
