Katherine Ryan brings her new stand-up show, Firstborn Daughter, to the Garrick Theatre on Saturday 24 October, with a matinee performance at 1.30pm. It's a one-woman show that turns her sharp, self-deprecating wit on a role she never auditioned for: the eldest daughter. Ryan describes it as being hardwired from birth to manage everyone's emotions, schedules and crises but her own, and the set builds around that.
It's not just a run of jokes, though. The show blends personal memoir with pop psychology, drawing on Adler's birth order theory and the concept of 'parentification'. Along the way, she keeps a running tally of famous fellow eldest daughters—Oprah, Taylor Swift and Princess Anne among them—to argue that an entire generation of women has been quietly running the show, unpaid and unacknowledged. You'll hear the unfiltered stories behind the pages of her new book, and every ticket includes a copy of it.

Ryan isn't taking the stage alone; Chidera Eggerue joins as special guest. The performance runs an hour and twenty minutes with no interval, and it's recommended for ages 14 and over, as it's likely to contain swearing and adult content. Tickets are £46, and the show is at the Garrick Theatre, 2 Charing Cross Rd, London, WC2H 0HH, on Saturday 24 October at 1.30pm.
