Stand-up show by Joseph Morpurgo, a multimedia 'found' comedy built from a 1970 high school yearbook from New Jersey.
Joseph Morpurgo is back at Soho Theatre on Saturday 17 October with Highlander 70, his first new show in nearly a decade. It's been a long wait since his 2015 piece Soothing Sounds for Baby, which ran to a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, so this is a proper return to the stage.
The whole thing started when Morpurgo picked up a 1970 high school yearbook from Highlander Academy in New Jersey at a car boot sale. From there he built a yarn around David Moon, a student whose private diary went missing on graduation day. The show is staged as a multimedia presentation built from the book's pages, which are often doctored and animated, and it makes use of pre-recorded character voices and audience interaction. It's all driven by Morpurgo's eccentric, self-described 'weirdy' Fringe style, and it's been billed as the UK's foremost 'found' comedy.
Morpurgo is a multi-genre comedian, and this is just one side of his work. He's a founder of the West End improv show Austentatious and has written for Harry and Paul's Story of the 2s, Murder in Successville and Aardman's Shaun The Sheep. Critics have called Highlander 70 a comedy masterclass.
