West End production of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hadestown, a folk, jazz and blues retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth.
Hadestown is running at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, with bookings open until Sunday 12 December 2027. It's the West End premiere of the Broadway musical, and if you've heard the name but haven't seen it, it's a retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set against a Depression-era backdrop. The story follows those two young dreamers, and weaves their lives together with those of King Hades and his wife Persephone.
It's a production that comes from a single creative source: singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell wrote the music, the lyrics, and the book, and Rachel Chavkin directed it. The music is where the show really sits, blending folk, jazz, and blues into a score that Mitchell first released as a concept album back in 2010. From there it moved to the stage, premiering in Canada in 2016 before playing at London's National Olivier Theatre in 2018, and then opening on Broadway in April 2019. That Broadway run picked up eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album.
It's recommended for ages 8 and over, so it works as a family outing as much as a night out. The running time is 2 hours 30 minutes, which includes one interval.
