Atmospheric walking tour of The Barbican after dark, exploring the estate's haunted history from Roman times to the present.
The Barbican is running Ghost Tours: The Barbican After Dark, a walking tour that takes you through the estate after dark from Sunday 11 October 2026 through to Saturday 27 March 2027. It's a bit of a strange one: a Brutalist landmark sitting on nearly two thousand years of history, from Roman forts and burial grounds to plague pits, fire, war and ruin. The tour lasts around 75 to 90 minutes and is partly outdoors, following the estate's highwalks and underground spaces where the Centre's hidden interior meets that older world below.
Staff stories of mysterious voices, fleeting figures and unexplained noises thread through the route, which ends in the usually closed Library Stack Rooms. Beyond the tour, the Barbican is worth visiting for its Grade II-listed architecture, public spaces and estate gardens, all free to explore. The walk isn't currently wheelchair accessible, taking in steps and uneven surfaces, and is recommended for ages 12 and over.
