Interdisciplinary dance and visual art duet by Georgia Tegou that explores the fragile nature of human connection through the lens of the brain's architecture.
Georgia Tegou brings In the Quiet of Us to the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 November, with the world premiere taking place on the opening night. It's a dance and visual art duet that looks at the fragility of human connection through the lens of the brain's architecture, and it's a Sadler's Wells commission from a London-based choreographer who opened the Dance Umbrella International Festival in 2022 and was nominated for a UK National Dance Award in 2026.
The piece is built around the Tegos Tapes, a rare archive of microneurosurgery footage created by neurosurgeon Dr Stergios Tegos β Tegou's uncle β in collaboration with the composer Vangelis. That medical footage sits alongside the movement on stage, and the space itself shifts throughout the performance, moving from a room to an operating theatre to a neuronal synapse. The two performers, Joshua Smith and Helena HΓΆrmann, work in an environment where breathing, weight-shifting and small gestures carry the weight of the piece.
Myth comes into it too, with stories like Tristan and Isolde and Theseus surfacing around a recurring motif: the missed signal, the ship that never arrives. The live score is composed and performed by Alexandros Miaris, who combines prepared piano and modular synth processes shaped by Euclidean sequencing. The whole thing is directed and choreographed by Tegou, with set design and curation by Andrew Borg Wirth, dramaturgy and physical theatre coaching by Jack Kelly, lighting by Ryan Joseph Stafford, costume by Saraenka, and video by Nick Theuma. Dr Leor Zmigrod and Dr Nikos Erinakis served as scientific advisors, and Donna Meierdiercks produced.
