Drummer and keyboardist Gary Husband returns to the drum chair for the first time in 16 years to lead The Orbital Band through jazz and fusion.
Gary Husband is back behind the drums at Ronnie Scott's on Friday 13 November, leading The Orbital Band. It's a particular kind of return: Husband is stepping back into the drum chair for the first time in 16 years, so the night is as much about him reclaiming that seat as it is about the music. He's one of the few musicians to build a career as both a drummer and a keyboard player, and this is the drumming side of that coin taking centre stage.
The set draws from a few different places. There'll be new and classic compositions by Husband himself, and the other band members bring their own music to the table too. On top of that, the band will play adapted interpretations of pieces from Husband's collaborations with Allan Holdsworth, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham and Jeff Beck. It's a broad reach, and the set should reflect it.
He's not doing it alone. The Orbital Band is a quartet, with Husband on drums, Rocco Zifarelli on guitar, Tom Cawley on keyboards and Matthew Garrison on bass. Husband's own career has run through jazz, fusion, rock, funk, blues and classical music, and over four decades he's worked with John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern, Level 42 and Gary Moore, with credits that stretch to Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, Chaka Khan, Paul Simon and Ennio Morricone. That's a lot of ground to cover, and the line-up is built to handle it.
