UK premiere of 'umuko', a piece by Dorothée Munyaneza's Cie Kadidi that weaves past, present and future through dance, poetry, music and song.
Dorothée Munyaneza and her company, Cie Kadidi, bring umuko to Sadler's Wells East on 2 and 3 February 2027. It's a UK premiere, and it forms part of The Rose Prize 2027, Sadler's Wells' biennial award for original dance creations from around the world, which recognises choreography, style and performance quality alongside the Bloom Prize for artists with up to ten years of choreographic experience.
umuko gathers five young performers under the umuko tree, the ancestral healing and guardian tree of Rwanda, to explore ejo, a Kinyarwanda word that means both 'yesterday' and 'tomorrow'. The piece weaves past, present and future through dance, poetry, music and song, so it's as much about sound and word as it is about movement.
Munyaneza is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Marseille, and the work draws on the diversity of her heritage: family in Rwanda, growing up in Kigali and London, then Paris and Marseille. She formed Cie Kadidi in Marseille in 2013, and the company has since toured across Europe, Canada, the USA and Brazil. She's also committed to supporting the emergence of younger artists in Rwanda, which sits right at the heart of this piece.
