Narrative dance production by Alleyne Dance about the stresses of migrant families and the meaning of tolerance and integration.
Alleyne Dance bring Far From Home to Sadler's Wells East on Saturday 17 October, a narrative production that looks at immigration and the search for a better life. It's choreographed by Sadé Alleyne and features six dance artists on stage, joined by an intergenerational cast of movers from the local community. The company's style pulls from Caribbean, hip hop and kathak, all within a contemporary dance context, and Far From Home follows the emotional and mental stresses migrant families carry and the impact they leave on the communities where they settle. Along the way, it picks at the meaning of tolerance and how integration actually works in practice.
Alleyne Dance is a multi-award-winning company, and the two sisters behind it, Kristina and Sadé Alleyne, have just been appointed Guest Artistic Directors of National Youth Dance Company for the 2025/2026 season. The work itself is described as hard-hitting, atmospheric and abstract, so it's less a literal story and more a piece that lets the movement do the heavy lifting. With six professional dancers and a local cast of all ages sharing the stage, it's a production that brings in people from the community rather than keeping the performance strictly to the professionals.
