Screening of the Oscar-winning 2023 blockbuster 'Godzilla Minus One', presented in Japanese with English subtitles and an introduction, within the 'All Kaiju Attack: All Stars!' season.
Godzilla Minus One is screening at the Barbican Centre on Tuesday 20 October, as part of a wider season called All Kaiju Attack: All Stars!. The film is the 2023 blockbuster directed by Takashi Yamazaki, and it's the first in the franchise to win an Academy Award. It runs for 124 minutes, presented in Japanese with English subtitles, and comes with an introduction before the film starts.
Set in the aftermath of WWII, it channels the tone and energy of the original 1954 Godzilla. Ryunosuke Kamiki plays a pilot plagued by shame and survivor's guilt, while a giant monster mutates following nuclear tests. Yamazaki wrote the screenplay and supervised the visual effects himself, so the whole thing carries his particular stamp.
The screening is part of a season curated by Alex Davidson and Steven Sloss, which they've built around celebrating the craft, skill and invention behind the biggest stars of Japanese monster movies — from Ghidorah and Mothra to Rodan, King Kong and Godzilla. Godzilla Minus One is the centrepiece, but the season also screens Frankenstein vs. Baragon (1965) and King Kong Escapes (1967), and every showing includes an introduction.
