Contemporary kathak piece by Aditi Mangaldas that blends her signature style with classical kathak, followed by a post-show talk.
Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company bring WITHIN to Sadler's Wells Theatre on 27 and 28 November, with both performances starting at 7:30 pm. It's a double bill of contemporary kathak, the North Indian classical dance known for its intricate footwork, rapid spins and storytelling through gesture and mime. The whole thing runs an hour and 45 minutes, with a 20-minute interval in the middle.
It opens with KNOTTED, a contemporary piece based on kathak, and closes with UNWRAPPED, which stays within the classical form. The two halves together explore inner human dualities, and the company on stage numbers 15 performers, including dancers and musicians. If you're not familiar with the style, it's a good way to see it from two angles in one night: the contemporary evolution and the classical roots.
Aditi Mangaldas herself is a leading kathak dancer and choreographer, often described as a maverick in India and unafraid to confront social and present-day concerns. She's built a reputation for pushing beyond classical kathak to develop her own contemporary style, and WITHIN sits right in that gap between the two. This isn't her first time at Sadler's Wells, either — she's previously staged Mehek, created with Aakash Odedra, and the acclaimed productions FORBIDDEN and IMMERSED.

After the show, there's a post-show talk with members of the company and the creative team, in conversation with Sir Alistair Spalding. It's free for anyone who holds a ticket for that performance, and it's BSL interpreted. The show is recommended for ages 12+, and tickets start from £15.
