Family concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra pairing live music with screenings of Julia Donaldson's children's books 'Room on the Broom' and 'Zog'.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is bringing two Julia Donaldson classics to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Sunday 25 October, with Room on the Broom and Zog both getting the full orchestral treatment. It's a double bill of the stories most of us know by heart, played live by the RLPO with the films screened alongside, and with Terry Davies conducting. There are a couple of tricks thrown in as well, so it's not just a straight reading of the books.
This sits within the RLPO's Family Concerts, which they aim at 5-to-10-year-olds. The whole series is built around seasonal celebrations, family films with live accompaniment, and orchestral trips through everything from outer space to the jungle, with the long-term goal of getting kids into music. This particular one is their way of marking the spooky season, and they've encouraged families to turn up in devilish disguises, so it's a good excuse to get the kids dressed up for the afternoon.
It's part of a wider family offering at the Hall. Alongside these are the Under 5s concerts, which are relaxed and informal performances held in the Music Room rather than the main auditorium. Those are designed for toddlers to get to know classical music through movement, songs and interactive fun, so if you've got a very young one who might struggle with a full concert, that's the one to keep in mind for later.
