A workshop led by performance maker WilL Dickie exploring movement through improvisation and dance, drawing on martial arts, feldenkrais and butoh influences.
WilL Dickie is running a movement workshop at Unity Theatre on Monday 2 November, starting at 6:00pm. It's a two-hour session that takes you through a series of exercises before opening up to group and solo improvisations, so you'll be on your feet for the whole thing. The improvisations draw on butoh dance, club culture and Dickie's own choreographic style.
Dickie is a Liverpool-based performance maker who's spent twenty years working across dance, theatre and live art. The exercises he uses come from his training in martial arts, Feldenkrais and the Suzuki method. He's a qualified Feldenkrais practitioner, and he trained in the martial art Kalaripayattu under director Phillip Zarrilli, the Nobbs Suzuki Praxis and Butoh dance as taught by Tadashi Endo. That's a lot of ground to cover in one room, and the session lets you see how those different traditions feed into his way of working.
His recent work as director and choreographer includes Go Call Ur Mother!, The Secret Garden at Regents Park Open Air Theatre and Echo in the Dark at Hospitalfields Scotland, and his one-man show White Sun has toured the UK and Australia. The workshop is open to actors, dancers, movers and makers of any experience level, so you don't need a background in any of that to get involved.
