A powerful one-man show by Wooden Bridge Productions, starring Don Wycherley as Paddy Armstrong, part of the Liverpool Irish Festival.
Don Wycherley takes the stage at Unity Theatre on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, playing the lead in The Life and Times of Paddy Armstrong, a one-man show from Wooden Bridge Productions. It's part of the Liverpool Irish Festival, which puts on artists of Irish heritage and their stories.
The play is about a real person: Paddy Armstrong, who in 1975 was falsely convicted of helping to carry out the Guildford and Woolwich bombings. Fifty years on, at 74, he's still wrestling with the memories of that injustice. The show takes its lead from Armstrong's own memoir, Life After Life, a Guildford Four Memoir (2017), and has toured the island of Ireland to sold-out audiences before coming back to Liverpool. The Irish Times called Wycherley 'incandescent' in the role, and the Irish Independent described the piece as 'gritty and moving'.
Unity Theatre has framed it within a season marking 100 years of radical theatre in the city, so it fits right into the kind of work they've been doing. A word of warning, though: anyone with lived experience of the Troubles is advised to consider whether the work is right for them, and support services are available before and after the performance.
