Screening of 'Saffron Kingdom', a film by Arfat Sheikh about identity, exile and resilience in Kashmir, at the Leeds School of Arts.
Saffron Kingdom, a film by Arfat Sheikh, screens at the Leeds School of Arts on Tuesday 10 November, from 18:00 to 20:00. It's a poignant look at identity, exile and resilience set against Kashmir's decades-long turmoil, and it's being shown in the heart of the city centre.
The story follows Masrat, a woman forced to flee her homeland after her husband is abducted. She finds refuge in Atlanta with her young son, Rizwan, and spends her time there immersed in academic research to document their past. Rizwan, meanwhile, grows up with the absence of a father he barely knew — a void that only deepens after Kashmir's autonomy is revoked. The film runs from the 1990s insurgency in Srinagar through to the political upheaval of 2019, blending an intimate personal story with wider historical themes into a meditation on belonging, justice and the lasting scars of an unresolved past.

It's being hosted at the Leeds School of Arts, the new £80m Leeds Beckett University campus on Portland Way, which houses theatres and cinema screening rooms and was nominated 'Building of the Year' by Architects' Journal. The screening runs from 18:00 to 20:00 on Tuesday 10 November, so it's a mid-week evening in the city centre.
