Screening of Noƫl Coward's play 'Hay Fever', directed by Emily Burns, as part of the National Theatre Live series at the historic City Varieties Music Hall.
National Theatre Live brings Hay Fever to City Varieties Music Hall on Thursday 22 October, as part of their ongoing season of screenings. It's Noƫl Coward's comedy, directed by Emily Burns and produced by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, shown on the big screen rather than performed live on the night.
If you're not familiar with the play, Hay Fever is one of Coward's best-known comedies, and this particular production comes to Leeds via the National Theatre Live cycle, which broadcasts stage shows from London to cinemas and theatres across the country. It's a good way to catch a West End-standard production without having to make the trip south.
The venue is City Varieties Music Hall on Swan Street, Leeds' oldest working theatre and the Guinness World Record holder for the nation's longest-running music hall. It opened in 1865 as a room above a pub for the working class and has stayed virtually unchanged since the late 19th century. Barring a pandemic closure in 2020-21 and a facelift between 2009 and 2011, it's never shut its doors. The stage has hosted everyone from Houdini to Russell Crowe, so it's a bit of a Leeds institution.

On the practical side, the venue is well-equipped for accessibility: they provide audio description, British Sign Language, captioning and wheelchair access, so it's an easy one to bring a group along to. The screening is on Thursday 22 October at City Varieties Music Hall, LS1 6LW.
