Educational workshop led by the Greater Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association on the differences between Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.
Pike Branch is hosting a workshop on understanding Alzheimer's and dementia on Thursday, November 19, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It's run in partnership with the Greater Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and the session is led by the association's own staff and volunteers. If you've ever been confused about the difference between the two, that's where they start: they'll explain how dementia and Alzheimer's disease are the same and how they're different, and walk you through the distinctions between Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. It's the kind of thing that's easy to get mixed up if you haven't spent much time with it.
From there, the workshop covers the different stages of the disease, the key risk factors, the latest research developments, and the FDA-approved treatments available to manage it. It's a broad sweep in a single hour, so it works whether you're looking for a general overview or have a specific question about where things stand right now. Because it's led by people from the Alzheimer's Association, you're getting the information from the source rather than a general summary.
If you want to keep reading on your own, the library staff have a few recommendations ready. They suggest Alzheimer's Disease - Creative Interactions and Caring for a Loved One with Dementia for the more practical side of things, and the children's book Sharing Memories for when you're talking about it with kids. You can find those at the branch if you want to dive deeper after the session.
