Hands-on STEAM session for kids aged 12 and up to explore engineering and coding with VEX GO Robotics kits, part of the library's Kid Central programming.
Central Library is hosting a Kids STEAM Lab: Robotics session on Tuesday, October 27, from 5 PM to 7 PM. It's part of the library's Kid Central programming, a series of hands-on STEAM projects designed to get kids thinking creatively and solving problems by actually building things rather than just reading about them. This particular session is aimed at school-age kids 12 and up, so it's geared toward the older end of the youth crowd.
The focus here is robotics, and the tools they'll be working with are VEX GO Robotics kits. If you're not familiar, VEX GO is a system of snap-together parts—beams, pins, and connectors—that lets you build robots without needing a soldering iron or a workshop full of heavy tools. The session covers two main areas: engineering, where you figure out how to put the pieces together to make something that moves, and coding, where you write the instructions that tell the robot what to do. It's a good way to see how the two work together in one project.

Because it's a lab, the whole thing is hands-on. You're not just watching a demonstration; you're the one building and tweaking. It's the kind of thing that works well for kids who like to take things apart and see how they work, and since it's open to anyone 12 and up, it's a low-pressure way to get into robotics if you've never touched a kit before. No registration is required to take part, so you can just show up. The session runs from 5 PM to 7 PM on Tuesday, October 27, at the Central Library, 40 East Saint Clair Street in downtown Indianapolis.
