Six Saturdays of one-hour intergenerational workshops in visual arts, music and dance where older adults and younger participants create together.
Six Saturdays kicks off at the Brightwood Community Center on Saturday, November 7, and runs through December 12. It's an intergenerational arts series built around one simple idea: creating something together every Saturday. The workshops are open to all ages, pairing older adults with younger participants to work side by side on a project, with the making process as much the point as the finished piece.
Over the course of the series, the workshops touch on visual arts, music, and dance, so you're not stuck in one medium for the whole run. Each session lasts an hour and is led by a different artist or maker, which means the focus shifts every week. One Saturday might be about painting, the next about movement or sound, and the one after that something else entirely. Because the artists change, you get a variety of styles and approaches rather than one voice carrying the whole thing.
The intergenerational part is the real heart of it. It's not just a class where everyone works on their own; it's designed to bring different age groups together to collaborate on the same project. The goal is to have people who wouldn't normally cross paths working shoulder to shoulder, and as the series describes it, the act of making is just as important as whatever you end up with at the end.
