Adult book club where attendees bring what they are reading and spend a quiet time reading uninterrupted.
Quiet Library meets at the Spades Park Branch on Wednesday, November 25, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. It's a book club aimed at adults, and the format is a bit different from your usual discussion group: instead of everyone reading the same title, you bring whatever you're currently reading and spend a quiet stretch of time reading uninterrupted. After that, the group opens up for discussion.
If you've never been to the Spades Park Branch, it's at 1801 Nowland Avenue. The building has some history behind it—it was built with a $120,000 grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation and opened in 1912, just six months after the city's other remaining Carnegie library, the East Washington Branch. It's a 7,500-square-foot space that went through a $610,000 renovation in 1987 and celebrated its centenary in 2012.
Because you bring your own book, there's no assigned reading to keep up with. You just show up with whatever you've been working through—fiction, non-fiction, a long-overdue reread—and get some dedicated time to sink into it without the usual distractions. The discussion that follows lets you talk about what you've been reading with other people who are doing the same thing.
