Free open-air printmaking demonstrations by Indianapolis artist Lily Groot on her cargo bike, as part of the 'Prints for my City' project at Lugar Plaza.
Lily Groot brings her printmaking press to Lugar Plaza on Saturday, October 17, as part of the Downtown Fall Fest. She'll be running live demonstrations throughout the morning, and it's free to stop by and watch. The whole thing falls under her project Prints for my City, which is exactly what it sounds like: taking a medium that usually stays tucked away in a studio and bringing it out into the open.
The setup is the best part. Groot straps a printing press onto a cargo bike — a Firth and Wilson Shorty from Transport Cycles in Philadelphia — and rides it into the city's public spaces to make prints right there on the sidewalk. It's a way of taking printmaking out from behind the gallery wall and letting people see how it actually works. The project is supported by an Art in Public Spaces grant from the Indy Arts Council and the City of Indianapolis, and it's built around the idea of making the process visible to anyone walking by.
Groot is an Indianapolis artist who runs Cat Head Press, a community studio on the city's near east side, and she's exhibited her work around town. She talks about the bike as more than just a way to move her gear; for her, it's a tool for creative work, for leisure, and for connecting with herself, the city, and her neighbors. That's the spirit she's bringing to the plaza — less of a formal exhibition and more of a working session in the middle of the street.
