Halloween scavenger hunt for families at the Eagle Creek Park Ornithology Center.
Not So Scary Scavengers is a scavenger hunt at the Eagle Creek Park Ornithology Center on Saturday, October 31, from 4 PM to 5 PM. It's a Halloween-themed hunt that puts you right in the middle of the park's bird-focused side of things.
If you've spent any time at Eagle Creek, you know it's one of the biggest city parks in the country, with about 1,400 acres of water and 3,900 acres of forest. The Ornithology Center itself opened in 2010 in the building that used to be J.K. Lilly's private library, and for 30 years before that, it served as the park's Nature Center. Inside, there's an 800-square-foot exhibit hall with around 100 taxidermy birds, so there's plenty to look at even when you aren't out on the hunt.
That birding focus runs through everything the center does. The National Audubon Society designates the park an Important Bird Area, and the center hosts live raptor programs, the Carlsen Aviary, and a migration obstacle course. The park is supported by the Eagle Creek Park Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit that isn't part of the Indy Parks system.
